Youth Worker Ruth Jones

Hello, my name is Ruth Jones and I am the Ecumenical Youth Worker for Holsworthy and District. I am employed by the Holsworthy Community Christian Youth Chaplaincy, which is a new charity that has recently been initiated by the local Christians Together group to facilitate youth work in this area.

Who am I?

Whilst I have recently moved to the area to work here, I am not new to the South West. I grew up in Bristol, having been born in Norwich, living with my parents and younger brother. I was brought up in a Christian family and became a Christian when I was in my early teens. I have been involved in working with children and young people, including helping at church clubs, Sunday teaching sessions and with Beaver Scouts for a long time.

Having completed my A Levels in Bristol, I took a gap year, volunteering as an administrator for a local Christian Community Project before I moved to Portsmouth to study for a Biochemistry degree. Following on from my degree I moved back to Bristol and I got a job as a science technician in a local secondary school. This gave me a greater understanding of how schools work and what young people experience in the school. I knew that this wasn’t where I was meant to be, so I started exploring other options, eventually feeling that youth work was where I was meant to be. I applied to start youth work training with South West Youth Ministries (SWYM) and got placed in Torquay to start my training in 2013. At the end of my first year of training, I applied to study for a degree in Applied Theology with Missional Youthwork at Moorlands Bible College, being based at their South West campus in Torquay, where I was placed. I completed that in June 2017 and after a process of job hunting, was appointed as Ecumenical Youth Worker for Holsworthy at the end of December (4 days before Christmas!).

What do I do?

I am the ecumenical youth worker for Holsworthy and District, working for the Holsworthy Community Christian Youth Chaplaincy (HCCYC). HCCYC is a charity that was set up in February 2018.

My time is split between work in the community and work in the school.

At the school, I work within lessons to support students and staff, focusing particularly on Religious Education and Science, leading assemblies and helping with pastoral support. I am also looking to start a lunch club in September. I also am starting to build links with some of the local primary schools.

Outside of the school I help at Holsworthy and Halwill Baptist Church youth clubs and Rock Solid and Kree8 youth services. I have also been busy making connections and building a network of contacts. Each week is different. I am also visiting the various churches in the area who are supporting the project and occasionally help with Messy Church and Creative Church.

I will be updating this page as the project develops. If you would like more information on what I do, would like me to come and speak to a group you are part of or would like to know how to support the project then please contact youthworker.hccyc@gmail.comor 07845 815824 (please leave a message and I’ll get back to you).
